Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid correction surgery is chosen by people who have excess soft tissue on their eyelids. The goal of blepharoplasty is to rejuvenate the appearance, “open up” the eyes and restore a lighter, more refreshed look to the face.

Indications for blepharoplasty / eyelid correction:

  • excess soft tissue on the lower eyelids (e.g. so-called “bags under the eyes”)
  • excess soft tissue on the upper eyelids

Before eyelid correction surgery:

A consultation prior to blepharoplasty is essential, during which the patient is informed about the necessary incisions, scars and the expected result. The doctor assesses whether a correction of drooping eyebrows should also be performed. After blepharoplasty, scars usually remain in concealed locations and are barely visible. Before the surgery itself, tests for local anaesthesia must be performed: blood type, complete blood count, coagulation panel, HBs, HCV.

General dietary recommendations from a nutritionist before blepharoplasty:

For better preparation for the procedure, it is also worth following dietary recommendations. The pre-procedure diet must not be restrictive, as protein deficiency impairs the healing of post-operative wounds. Pay attention to supplements that may cause excessive bleeding, e.g. vitamin E preparations, ginkgo biloba, and medications containing acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin and its derivatives). Also, chilli, cayenne, garlic, ginger, saffron, onion, celery and horseradish may increase the risk of bleeding.

Eyelid correction - type of anaesthesia:

Local

Duration of blepharoplasty surgery:

Approximately 1.5 hours depending on the scope of the procedure (upper/lower eyelids)

Blepharoplasty - surgical procedure:

After administering local anaesthesia, skin is excised along with the orbicularis muscle at previously planned locations. Excess fat pads are removed and, once bleeding is controlled, the wound is closed in layers. A compression dressing is applied for 24 hours.

Post-operative recommendations:

Cooling the operated area during the first 24 hours after the procedure is recommended (cold pack). Sutures are usually removed on day 5. Bruising may persist for up to 2 weeks, and swelling for several weeks. The eyes must be protected from dust and injuries. Return to work is generally possible after approximately 10 days.

Blepharoplasty - recovery time:

The final result is visible after several weeks.
