Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Pregnancies, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations and the natural ageing processes of the skin all change the shape of a woman's breasts. As the skin loses density and ligaments stretch, the breasts lose their firmness and begin to sag. Many women experience significant discomfort as a result. At Artisan Clinic we offer the breast lift (mastopexy) procedure, which allows the breasts to be lifted and firmed, restoring a youthful appearance.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Initial Consultation

Before the breast lift procedure a consultation is necessary, during which the patient presents her expectations and learns about the surgical technique most effective in her case. During the consultation the plastic surgeon also discusses the achievable final result of the breast lift.

Before the procedure a meeting with the anesthesiologist takes place to agree on the details of anesthesia during the procedure. After the consultation each patient receives detailed preoperative recommendations along with information about the tests she should complete before the procedure.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Nutritional Recommendations Before the Procedure

To better prepare for the breast lift procedure it is also worth following nutritional recommendations. The diet before the procedure must not be restrictive, as protein deficiency impairs healing of postoperative wounds. However, certain modifications are worthwhile. The diet should be easily digestible and fatty products causing bloating should be eliminated. Smoking and alcohol must be stopped completely.

It is also worth paying attention to medications that may cause excessive bleeding, e.g. preparations containing vitamin E, ginkofar, and medications containing acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin and its derivatives). It is also advisable to avoid certain spices: chilli, cayenne pepper, garlic, ginger, saffron, onion, celery, and horseradish may increase the risk of bleeding.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Type of Anesthesia

Depending on the surgical technique, general or local anesthesia is used.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Duration of the Procedure

The breast lift procedure, from the moment anesthesia is administered to the fitting of the special bra, takes approximately 3 hours.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Course of the Procedure

The procedure involves removal of excess skin, reshaping of the breast (glandular tissue and adipose tissue), and then lifting. During the procedure the areola is repositioned upward and any breast asymmetry is corrected. The surgical technique is selected individually; depending on the degree of breast ptosis the plastic surgeon makes an incision around the areola, vertical incisions, or anchor incisions. After placing sutures a special stabilising bra is fitted.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Postoperative Recommendations

After the procedure the patient stays for one day under the care of qualified medical staff at Artisan Clinic.

Pain that may persist for several days can be relieved using pain relief medications recommended by the doctor. From the 3rd week after the procedure the use of scar patches or scar ointments is recommended. Healing scars should be massaged starting 4 weeks after the procedure. After the procedure it is recommended to wear a shaping bra for approximately 3 months. Physical activity should also be limited for approximately 2 weeks. Return to work (depending on its nature) is possible after one week. Cardio sports activity can be resumed 4 weeks after the procedure. A gradual return to more intensive exercise is possible after 6–8 weeks.

Upon leaving Artisan Clinic, each patient receives detailed recommendations for the recovery period.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Recovery Time

The shape of the breasts and their lift are visible immediately, however the final result of the procedure is fully visible after several months.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – Nutritional Recommendations After the Procedure

The diet after breast lift surgery is extremely important, and proper balance ensures supply of nutrients essential for correct wound healing. Meals should be prepared so that they are easily digestible and nutrients well absorbed. The daily menu must include products that are sources of high-quality protein. Zinc, iron, and vitamins also play an important role in the recovery process, so adequate intake in the diet should be ensured.
